Sage Rosenfels doesn't know if or when the Dolphins might call on him to relieve or replace Matt Moore at quarterback.
He does know he's happy to be healthy enough to play football again. Maybe even as soon as tonight against the New York Jets at MetLife Stadium.
It was mid-August when Rosenfels, who was with the New York Giants at the time, woke up one morning with what he thought was nothing more than a sore throat. He quickly noticed that he was tiring more easily than usual.
"That turned into strep throat," said Rosenfels, in his second stint with Miami . "I developed an abcess in my throat, and it attacked the rest of my body ... my back and different spots. My back actually locked up on me. I was most concerned with the practice time I was missing, but it was discouraging and a little scary that I wasn't getting better."
There were four hospital stays - a day, two days, five days, two days - across a three-week period.
"It took the doctors a long time to figure it out," said Rosenfels of what is believed to have been a blood infection. "It was a mystery to them, too. I'm sure it'll be a case study someday."
The 33-year-old Rosenfels is a case study in journeyman.
The Giants released him, and the Dolphins, for whom Rosenfels played four seasons (2002-05), called him after starting quarterback Chad Henne suffered a season-ending injury to his left shoulder. It's the latest stop in Rosenfels' career that has included, among Miami, stops in Washington, Houston, Minnesota and the Giants across the past decade.
He has played in 44 games and started 12 times.
"I don't sit around categorizing my career," Rosenfels said . "That's not something I sit around and do. I'm working every day to get better. I still think I have a ways to get better as a player.
"There's always new things to learn. I've learned a lot from (Brett) Favre two years ago (with the Vikings). I learned a lot from Eli (Manning with the Giants) this past year. I'll try to share some of that knowledge here with Matt."
Moore, elevated from backup to starter in the wake of Henne's injury, is happy to listen.
"He's been great," Moore said of Rosenfels. "He's been a starter and a backup in similar situations that I've been in. He's been a big help watching film and bouncing things off him."
Rosenfels understands his own situation.
"Matt is the starter," he said. "I've seen Matt play. Two years ago, we (were going) to the (NFC) championship game when I was with the Vikings. We went to Carolina and they had nothing to play for. Matt beat us. I mean, he played great. I know what the guy can do. He can make plays when there's nothing there, and he can throw it. He's a competitor."
So is Rosenfels, who is in his 11th season after being a fourth-round draft pick out of Iowa State . He's a worker. He's smart and tough. He's unfazed by tasks at hand.
"This is one offense I don't know," Rosenfels said of the Dolphins. "I've had a lot of coordinators, but I haven't had (offensive coordinator Brian) Daboll's style. That's a challenge for me. It's not like baseball where you just show up and play third base, take your cuts.
"Quarterback, you have to know everything, know all the lines calls, the protections, the runs, the audible system. I have to learn and have to learn quickly, but I'm doing the best I can.
"It's been a long time since I've been in practice. I haven't practiced since the middle of training camp. I'm not in the best shape of my life, but we all knew that."
He played in 13 games for Miami all those years ago. He started twice.
His statistics with the Dolphins were 54-of-109 for 776 yards with six touchdowns and six interceptions.
There's nothing fancy about Rosenfels, and never has been. But he's been a comfortable insurance policy as a quarterback for a very long time, which the Dolphins find worthwhile, especially after starting out 0-4.
