KEY MATCHUP
WR Brandon Marshall vs. CB Antonio Cromartie: When the Dolphins got Marshall, he was supposed to be a matchup headache and a big play receiver. But he has been plagued by drops and admitted this week that he hasn't brought the right kind of intensity to the game, even joking that he'll be kicked out of this one in the second quarter. Cromartie can match Marshall's size and he knows him well from all those Chargers-Broncos games.
INJURY REPORT
Although Matt Moore will make his first start at QB for the injured Chad Henne, the bye week gave the Dolphins time to get healthier, especially in their beleaguered secondary. CB Vontae Davis will return after missing two games with a hamstring injury. Listed as questionable, all with hamstring injuries, were rookie RB Daniel Thomas, CB Nolan Carroll and S Chris Clemons while TE Will Yeatman was questionable with a shoulder. WR Logan Payne, DL Ropati Pitoitua, DB Donald Strickland, and DB Isaiah Trufant are out for the Jets. C Nick Mangold will play with his ankle injury.
"Matt Moore may have had an extra practice week to get in sync with his receivers but he's going to see a lot of pressure packages and blitzes out of this Jets front. The Dolphins' pass protection has been abysmal, right down to (left tackle) Jake Long. This is a great chance for the Jets defense to get back its disruptive nature. Offensively, the Jets haven't established any identity. I'd look for a heavy run approach to keep (Mark) Sanchez out of obvious passing downs. The Dolphins are very vulnerable at the safety spots and tight end Dustin Keller can be big in this game."
INTANGIBLES
The Jets haven't faced this kind of adversity or criticism since Rex Ryan took over and they haven't handled it well. There have been brushfires in the locker room between Santonio Holmes and the offensive line, coming off reports in the Daily News that the receiving corps was unhappy with offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer, followed by the mysterious trade of Derrick Mason. Luckily, they get a chance to take out all their frustrations on the winless Dolphins. This is as close to a must win early in the season as they come. A fourth straight loss would practically bury them. But be careful: Miami always plays the Jets tough and it's had a bye week to regroup.
